Centre Court is so called as it was the central court on the original site of the All England Lawn Tennis Club on Worple Road. The name was retained when the AELTC moved to its new and still current site of Church Road in 1922.
Since it opened in 1922 the capacity has been significantly increased by raising the roof by one metre in 1979, by further more substantial works in 1992 and most recently by adding six rows of seats to the upper tier on the east, north and west sides, giving a current capacity of 15,000.
At the south end is the Royal Box which has played host to many members of the Royal family and dignitaries. In 2009 Wimbledon Centre Court was fitted with a retractable roof to prevent the play being stopped due to heavy rain or when it became too hot. The roof takes 10 minutes to open/close and play is suspended for a short time while this is done. It means spectators don’t need to worry about the match being called off due to the English weather and they can continue to watch the match without worry. The famous show court usually hosts finals and semi-finals involving the higher profile players.
